The AJC reports that Federal Government officials are planning to recommend lowering the legal limit from .08 to .05. Buckle your seatbelts for the implementation of the new prohibition.  Federal government officials stated goal is to completely eliminate alcohol-related deaths.  Since one drink for women and two drinks for men could make you DUI, expect a brave new world of no public drinking. Bars will close, restaurants will go out of business and professional sports teams will not be able to pay for their expensive publically financed stadiums.  The CATO institute found that lowering the legal limit from .1 to .08 increased DUI fatalities since scarce police resources were being spent arresting sober drivers while fatally drunk drivers drove past smirking and later killed someone.  On the other hand, any State refusing to pass DUI laws pushing the legal limit to ridiculously low levels would have to pass up millions of dollars of federal highway funds. Finally, there may be a Constitutional problem with this type of forced state mandate hijacking federal highway funds based on the U.S. Supreme Court’s Obamacare decision but only time will tell if the neo-prohibitionist can put this cherry on their new prohibition pie.
